NORMAN RECORDS (8/10) ~ "We're playing rock with acoustic guitars", reads the packet for Deaf Sun/Deaf Blues. True, rockers, true: Permanent Fatal Error make folk rock strides for the bulk of their new EP, striking rather than strumming and articulating themselves with all of their arsenal at once -- you know those scenes in fantasy films where everyone fires their arrows at once and you wonder how that’s not totally deadly? That, but with folk arrangements. These five songs are arranged around acoustic guitars, dramatic lyrical treatises and a bit of Elephant Six inspired trickery, when the cosmos up above gets its way.
It’s amazing how versatile a sound this band can conjure in just five small examples: it starts with “Sing A Song”, which is strummed so hard it almost sounds psychedelically moved -- a little Love, perhaps -- but ultimately is just a loud, exuberant folk ditty. The band round in on a more homogenous, circular playing style for “Giulo’s Song”, which will resonate with fans of Jessica Pratt’s closed off folk songs and Jim Guthrie’s bizarrely wound-up and decoratively twee tunes. And then there’s “Solar Penguin”, which marries unmoveable organ sounds with cathartically exhaled harmonies and that cherished school-time instrument, the xylophone. If that’s not an adoring rip of The Olivia Tremor Control, then what exactly is it? It doesn’t matter; it’s lovely. In each of their chosen folk fashion styles, Permanent Fatal Error rock the sadness and jubilation -- the very essence of their timeworn influences.

E tirandoci fuori uno straordinario disco di canzoni che rimandano a Spector e Mark Linkous nelle inflessioni ultrapop di “Sing a song” quanto a certi Death in june in cose come “Blood”. E ovviamente agli Ulan Bator, di cui Manchion fece parte nel periodo più florido, quando le batterie picchiano e sembrano perdere colpi in pezzi come “Solar Penguin”. Un paesaggio cotto e desolato come la straordinaria copertina del disco. Deaf sun / Deaf blues dei Permanent fatal error è il nostro disco del giorno. /// 10 anni d’attesa per un bel ritorno: Deaf Sun /Deaf Blues è l’ep con cui Olivier Manchion ritorna a farsi ascoltare con il suo progetto Permanent Fatal Error. Di acqua sotto i ponti ne è passata e la ricerca ha portato ad una nuova ispirazione e a cinque nuove tracce dalla produzione eccellente e delicate come i petali di un fiore.
Un sound ai confini dell’onirico, a tratti naïf, dondolando tra gli Sparklehorse e gli Air di “Moon Safari”, per la precisione un songwriting sospeso tra trip-hop, la psichedelica ed il post-rock.
A primo impatto, confrontandolo con il precedente album interamente strumentale “Law Speed”, è come se ci ritrovassimo dinnanzi ad un modo di percepire il “fare musica” diametralmente opposto rispetto a quest’ultimo lavoro; meno sperimentale ed elitario come sound eppure decisamente sperimentale come svolta stilistica e ispirata. È come se questi due lavori si specchiassero e si osservassero attentamente, condividono in alcuni tratti lo stesso groove, ed è come se il primo sapesse già cosa sarebbe arrivato dopo. Infatti ascoltando Deaf sun/Deaf Blues si può percepire chiaramente l’eco di “Law Speed”.
“Blood” va a riprendere le ritmiche e i fingerpicking inquieti del 2004 e di “Sunflowers”, ma il cantato trasmette un inestimabile valore aggiunto conferendo ulteriore profondità.
Fare musica strumentale è un’inclinazione più che una scelta e quando la si sa esprimere al meglio nascono pezzi di passaggio stupendi come “Giulio’s Song”: malinconico intermezzo dalle tastiere d’annata. Intermezzo necessario per sfociare nell’ultima parte della tracklist. Si approda a “Solar Penguin”, la sintesi di un ep perfetto e, probabilmente, uno dei pezzi più belli pubblicati dall’inizio di quest’anno. Un post-rock melodico, dall’allure d’oltralpe e contornato da una psichedelia prima leggera e via via sempre più spinta ma comunque essenziale e a tratti minimalista, senza esagerare con le dinamiche.
